“Singham IAS” Tukaram Mundhe’s Strict Food Safety Drive: Bombay HC Canteens, Bollywood Stars Under FDA Scanner

Maharashtra’s prominent IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe is currently in the spotlight for his strict action on food safety. What makes this significant is that his crackdown has now reached the Bombay High Court canteen.

The Bombay High Court had questioned the FDA’s approach, asking why government and High Court canteens were not being inspected if private hotels and restaurants were being checked. Following the court’s direction, the FDA inspected canteens on the High Court premises.

According to reports, the FDA team inspected three canteens. Two of them were found operating without the required FSSAI licences, following which their operations were stopped. The third canteen was issued a notice to make improvements.

The message from Tukaram Mundhe’s action is clear: the rules apply equally to everyone. Whether it is a major hotel, a small restaurant or a canteen inside a government institution, compliance with food safety regulations is mandatory.

Under Mundhe’s leadership, the Maharashtra FDA has launched a large-scale campaign against food adulteration, poor hygiene and violations of food safety regulations. His strict approach has made him a frequent subject of discussion.

However, the Bombay High Court has also questioned the FDA’s functioning in some cases. In one matter involving a sweet shop in Pune, the court ordered the FDA to pay ₹5 lakh in compensation and raised questions over the suspension of the shop’s licence. Mundhe, however, defended the FDA’s action as being in the public interest.

Tukaram Mundhe is known for his strict, honest and rule-oriented administrative style. During his 21-year administrative career, he has reportedly been transferred around 25 times, contributing to his reputation as an officer who frequently makes headlines for his decisions and working style.

Since taking charge as FDA Commissioner, his focus has been on food adulteration, poor hygiene and violations of food safety regulations. Over the past few months, the Maharashtra FDA has conducted extensive inspections of restaurants, hotels, shops, manufacturers and quick-commerce warehouses.

Reports claim that under Mundhe’s leadership, more than 1,100 raids were conducted in just two months. Several licences were suspended and action was taken against establishments found violating regulations. Even outlets of major food brands came under scrutiny.

His tough approach has led social media users to refer to him as “Singham IAS.”

Now, three major Bollywood stars—Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn and Tiger Shroff—have also come under the Maharashtra FDA’s scanner over their advertisements for Vimal Elaichi.

Under FDA Commissioner IAS Tukaram Mundhe, the three actors have reportedly been issued show-cause notices. The FDA says the advertisement could fall under surrogate advertising, where another product is used to promote the identity of a brand associated with products such as pan masala.

The three actors have been given 15 days to respond. FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has stated that if their responses are not satisfactory, a fine of up to ₹10 lakh could be imposed, along with further legal action.

Mundhe’s message is clear: when it comes to food safety and misleading advertising, no matter how big the name, the rules are the same for everyone.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also supported strict action against violations of food safety regulations.

So, Tukaram Mundhe’s story is not merely about his 25 transfers—it is about an officer who has left his mark through his uncompromising administrative style at every posting. Now, as FDA Commissioner, his message is direct: there will be zero tolerance for compromising food quality, safety and public health.
